Can I quit drinking alcohol already

I’ve said it. You’ve said it. Medium writer Tom Kuegler said it too.

I am constantly perplexed by our inability to make choices that serve us. We are afraid to choose a better path. People stay in shitty jobs, have catastrophic partners, and their relationships with their family are abusive, yet they stay.

Why do we stay?

  • Because we find comfort in the discomfort?
  • Because we’re masochists?
  • Because we’re afraid.

We’re afraid to make changes because we’re afraid of what other people will or could say. We don’t want to be put into a situation where we have to defend our choices because if our choice doesn’t match the flock, we’re fucked.

We could be kicked out of the flock for being “different.”

The flock doesn’t even know why they make the choices they make; they just continue to do what everyone else does, mindlessly, even when it makes them feel like shit. Like drinking.

Alcohol is complicated.

The media sells the message that if we drink we’ll be exciting, sexy, glamorous, patriotic, mysterious, approachable, elusive, whatever the adjective that we want to be, it’s been sold as the cure-all.
