How I’m studying for the SHRM-CP Exam

Including resources I’ve found and my approach to studying.

Roughly a year ago I decided that I needed to be legitimate in my position as a Human Resources professional. What I meant was I don’t feel confident in my role. But I didn’t know that.

I thought that a certification would prove that I was a real People Person that was not only competent enough but eligible to make strategic decisions.

There was an imaginary threshold that I wanted to cross and only the certification would do it for me and so I signed up for the SHRM-CP exam.

As I mentioned that was roughly a year ago. I am now finishing my second year with an “official” human resources title and my legitimacy in this role within myself goes unquestioned.

It has nothing to do with the amount of tenure with an HR title. I’ve been doing Human Resources for well over the majority of my career — it was just called different things or just one of the many hats I wore in addition to my other responsibilities.

And yet— I still paid for this exam. Not only that, I paid for all of its supplementary resources to ensure my passing of said exam. This monetary investment alone means I will be doing the damn thing.
